A ceiling fan can be a great addition to patios and outdoor dining areas, for instance. Additionally, it’s important to remove any standing water from your property that could attract mosquitoes. This includes removing or turning over any pots, planters, barrels, and other containers that may collect water. Make sure to keep gutters clog-free and improve drainage in your yard, too. Finally, planting shrubs and other landscaping plants that function as natural insect repellents can help to keep pests away from your home and yard.
Misting Systems
Misting systems are used in a variety of settings. They are typically placed over outdoor patios, gardens, livestock areas and commercial spaces to help deter flies and mosquitoes. They spray a fine, insecticide-laden mist that kills mosquitoes and flies on contact. It also suffocates the larvae in standing water and continues to repel even after it has dried on foliage. A misting system is especially useful at dawn and dusk when flies are most active.
Mosquitoes are attracted to standing water where they develop and lay their eggs. This is why eliminating large larval development sites (source reduction) is an important step in any mosquito control program. This may include draining rain gutters, emptying buckets and plant trays, changing out clogged birdbaths or fountains, and keeping swimming pools treated and circulating. Mosquito Traps
A variety of mosquito traps are available to homeowners, and some of them can be used in combination with weed control methods for ponds or by eliminating standing water on your property. They use sticky surfaces to capture mosquitoes and other insects that are attracted to a light or chemical source, which can include carbon dioxide. Some are self-contained and utilize propane for both power and the carbon dioxide that attracts mosquitoes, while others rely on electrical systems with outlets that must be located a considerable distance away from homes.
