pilonidal cyst surgery

If your pilonidal cyst is infected and there is a bloody discharge oozing out of it, you have to visit a good surgeon who will make the incision on the site, drain the abscess, and remove the cyst. Only this way can you get rid of the cyst. There is no medicine available that can dissolve the pilonidal cyst. Even if you wait, nothing is going to happen unless the cyst is silent and not infected. Once there is an infection, swelling, or pain, it indicates that you have to remove it before things get worse. But do you have any idea how you have to take care of yourself after the pilonidal cyst surgery?

People only know until the doctor does the surgery, and they think it’s the end of the process. But no, you must know how to take care of your wound after the surgery. This is important because you cannot stay in the hospital for long. You must come back home, and for this, you must know about the post-operative care for your wound so that it heals quickly without any issues.

Follow the steps to take care of your wound after Pilonidal Cyst Surgery

If you want your wound to recover early, you have to follow the below-mentioned tips and make sure that you do it with complete hygiene.

1.       Dressing after surgery

After your surgery is complete, your doctor will cover the wound with a dressing, which should not be removed until you cross the 24-hour gap. You can go back to your house the same day but you have to keep in mind that your dressing needs some time because the wound is fresh, and if you try removing it, your wound will be exposed, indicating high chances of infection and bleeding.

2.       Check the Bleeding

After crossing the 24-hour gap, it’s time to remove the tape on the dressing and soak the entire wound with water. This will help in loosening the dressing and you can easily remove it. Yes, it may hurt a bit but it’s fine that you have to bear this much pain because it will let you know if there is any bleeding or any other issue with the wound. There may be some small patches of blood, but that is normal. You do not have to worry about it.

3.       Redress your wound

You have now checked your wound, but it’s time to call for help, or you could have asked someone to stay with you while opening it. You cannot do it all by yourself. First, use a shower that you can hold in your hands, and with a normal flow, try to rinse the wound. The flow of water will clean the whole area, and if it can slightly bend forward, it will help to see the wound.

4.       Repack the wound:

After cleaning the wound, it’s time to dry the edges and start repacking the wound. You have to call for help so that the cotton gauze can be kept correctly. You cannot do it alone. If you have a person doing this, he/she will be able to see the wound clearly and put the dressing in the right place. Thus, you have to now repack the wound safely and make sure to clean up the edges to keep it safe from infection. Moreover, you must tell the person to wear gloves and you too should wear them if you are touching the area because it will maintain hygiene.

5. Trash old dressing & clean up the adjoining area

Now, you have to throw away the old dressing in the trash and use an antiseptic solution to clean the area adjacent to the wound. If you see small hair growing in that area, you must clean it. But make sure you use a hair removal cream or soft blade to avoid any rash or cuts near the wound.

What if the wound is taking time to heal?

If your wound is taking a  few extra days to heal, do not worry until you have to. If the wound is clean, there is no itching or any bloody discharge, you are safe to go. The healing process depends on each individual’s body, for some people, the healing period is very short, but for others, it takes a few extra days. So, you have to be patient with this and wait until you recover properly. Do not make frequent visits to the hospital just to think that there may be an issue. If you feel anything, call your doctor, discuss it with him, and then, if told, visit the hospital.

Conclusion:

Hence, now I am sure that you have an exact idea of how you can treat your wound after the surgery. You have to stay at ease, do not put pressure on your body, or do a heavy workout for at least one week post-surgery. This way you will help your body to recover early and healthily. So, stop thinking, and if you know someone who is been through this time, suggest they read all this and stay aware of all this important information.
