Google is developing an AI model for 1000 languages.

Google has provided more details about the Universal Speech Model (USM), which the company refers to as a “important first step” in achieving its objective of creating an AI language model that covers 1,000 languages in order to surpass ChatGPT.

In November last year, it had announced its plans to create a language model supporting 1,000 of world’s most-spoken languages while also revealing its USM model. It describes USM as a family of state-of-the-art speech models with 2 billion parameters trained on 12 million hours of speech and 28 billion sentences of text, spanning 300+ languages.
