If you and your family love spending time outdoors but find yourself avoiding the yard because of mosquitoes, you have options. Many methods are effective, but not all are long-term. For instance, bug zappers kill indiscriminately, including pollinators and other beneficial insects.

flies and Mosquitoes Control thrive in dirty, rotting food and waste, so proper trash disposal is essential. Natural predators like bats and purple marlins can also help control fly infestations.

Air Curtains

Air curtains (also known as “air doors”) provide a cost effective way to keep flies and mosquitoes out of a building or outdoor area. Air curtains use a powerful fan to blow a stream of air across an opening, creating a barrier that fly pests cannot penetrate. These specialized fans are typically mounted above a door or other entrance and serve to prevent the intrusion of dirt, debris, germs, secondhand smoke, truck exhaust, hot/cold weather, wind, dust, insects and more. They are especially useful for restaurants, auto body shops, kennels and other facilities that require a high level of cleanliness and germ control.

The best long term solution for keeping mosquitoes away is to ensure that doors, windows and porches are tightly screened with insect-proof mesh. Mosquitoes can also be kept at bay with a mosquito spray that contains synergized pyrethrum. Mosquito larvicides, such as bacillus thuringiensis releases or mosquito dunks, can be used in standing water to kill mosquito larvae before they mature into adults.

Mosquitoes can also be controlled by eliminating their breeding sites. Standing water, as well as shrubs, lower limbs of shade trees and under decks are all possible mosquito breeding areas. These can be reduced by draining or cleaning containers that hold water, emptying and refilling bird baths and fountains regularly, cutting back bushes and other overgrown areas and by using natural mosquito repellents, such as lavender candles, reed diffusers with essential oils like tea tree, eucalyptus, lemon, peppermint or citronella, which are safe for humans but deadly to mosquitoes.

Fans

Flies are not only a nuisance to people and pets, but they also carry pathogens that can cause diseases like Lyme disease, Powassan virus, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and other harmful illnesses. Mosquitoes are equally troublesome for homeowners, causing itchy, irritating bites. Mosquitoes can also be carriers of dangerous pathogens, including those that can cause West Nile Virus, Malaria, Dengue fever, and Chikungunya.

A variety of home products are available that claim to control mosquitoes, including bug zappers. However, many professionals are skeptical of these devices, which rely on ultraviolet light to lure mosquitoes before giving them a jolt. Instead, experts recommend taking a multi-faceted approach to control mosquitoes and other biting insects.

For example, strategically placed fans can help deter mosquitoes by directing a breeze over areas where people are likely to gather. A ceiling fan can be a great addition to patios and outdoor dining areas, for instance. Additionally, it’s important to remove any standing water from your property that could attract mosquitoes. This includes removing or turning over any pots, planters, barrels, and other containers that may collect water. Make sure to keep gutters clog-free and improve drainage in your yard, too. Finally, planting shrubs and other landscaping plants that function as natural insect repellents can help to keep pests away from your home and yard.

Misting Systems

Misting systems are used in a variety of settings. They are typically placed over outdoor patios, gardens, livestock areas and commercial spaces to help deter flies and mosquitoes. They spray a fine, insecticide-laden mist that kills mosquitoes and flies on contact. It also suffocates the larvae in standing water and continues to repel even after it has dried on foliage. A misting system is especially useful at dawn and dusk when flies are most active.

Mosquitoes are attracted to standing water where they develop and lay their eggs. This is why eliminating large larval development sites (source reduction) is an important step in any mosquito control program. This may include draining rain gutters, emptying buckets and plant trays, changing out clogged birdbaths or fountains, and keeping swimming pools treated and circulating. It also includes controlling the growth of aquatic weeds and removing any other sources of standing water around the property.

A misting system uses a pump and pressure regulator to create a fine, insecticide-laden mist. A wide range of spray volumes can be produced from a single unit, and many models feature features like wind censors, leak detection with automatic shut-off, and an agitation cycle that supplies a consistent insecticide concentration. Most products use pyrethrin botanicals to deliver low toxicity to humans and pets while offering effective control of mosquitoes, flies and other nuisance insects.

Mosquito Traps

A variety of mosquito traps are available to homeowners, and some of them can be used in combination with weed control methods for ponds or by eliminating standing water on your property. They use sticky surfaces to capture mosquitoes and other insects that are attracted to a light or chemical source, which can include carbon dioxide. Some are self-contained and utilize propane for both power and the carbon dioxide that attracts mosquitoes, while others rely on electrical systems with outlets that must be located a considerable distance away from homes.

One mosquito trap, developed by the CDC, uses what Buckner calls a “wet method” that includes a tray of liquid that drowns mosquitoes, and another product, based on CDC research, looks somewhat like a bucket with a little bit of water and hay inside. Pestemite provides service of Mosquitoes fly in, looking to lay eggs, but a screen prevents them from depositing their eggs and they are captured by the sticky paper on the side of the bucket.

Studies have shown that both the Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti mosquito species that cause disease are well controlled by these low-tech traps, but not Anopheles hyrcanus, the species that causes more nuisance mosquitoes. A more effective way to reduce mosquito populations is through larval controls for ponds and eliminating standing water, which can be done by emptying or relocating containers that hold water in your yard.
